If you're like most gardeners, once you discover how cost saving and labor saving perennials can be, you'll be hooked. One simple way to grow your collection is by dividing your plants so you can fill your whole yard and garden.
If you don't know a lot about the different types of perennials available you can read up and study the many garden books and catalogs available. Take time to know exactly what you're getting into before you add any plant into your garden, especially one that will last for many seasons. It might be a good idea to start out with native plants if you live close to the outdoors where you can dig them up in the woods and transplant them. The differecnce between perennials are different from annuals in that they survive through the winter and come back every year in your garden. However, some perennials don't flower the first year you plant them. Perennials decorate your garden with color for many years after they make it through their first winter. Just like any other type of plant, perennials require care. Perennials that grow too large for their space will need to be divided. Some and require pest control. Shrubs and trees are perennials as well since they come back year after year. You don't have to re-plant them every year and they often provide beautiful and interesting flowers. Try to plant a variety of perennials in your garden. That way you have a variety of bloom schedules. With different time throughout the season your yard is never without color. With a bit of planning on your part you have plants blooming during different weeks. There are literally thousands of varieties and choices of perennials to choose from for your perennial garden in different shapes, sizes and colors. Some of the most common varieties include peonies, irises, bleeding hearts, hardy mums, phlox, hydrangea, peonies, and grasses just to name a few.
