The Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) has been the official Maryland flower since 1918 when it was designated the "Floral Emblem" of Maryland by the General Assembly (Chapter 458, Acts of 1918; Code State Government Article, sec. 13-305).
This favorite native will grow in any soil from sand to clay, but it absolutely must have full sun. Plant spring, summer or fall. The species is very easy to grow, but rather difficult to keep blooming in meadow year after year. Due to its biennial habits, stands tend to be brilliant one year, with just a few flowers the next. Seed is small; do not cover. Simply press into loosened soil.
